How do you keep progress moving when the challenge is solid rock?
On Pulice – a FlatironDragados company’s Loop 1604 North project in San Antonio, crews completed a series of carefully planned blasting operations to remove nearly 19,000 cubic yards of solid rock. The work unlocked the next phase of roadway widening.
“Blasting this amount of material, especially solid rock by ordinary excavation methods, would take months,” said Superintendent Sergio Rosatti, who oversees special excavation on the project. “Blasting allows us to speed up the process for the traveling public and be able to get this project done in a more efficient manner.”
Every blast followed a detailed plan with multiple layers of protection.
“Nothing proceeds without making sure it’s safe first,” said Project Safety Manager Berlyn Nava. “We make sure that not only our personnel, but the traveling public and the surrounding areas are safe at all times. “
Immediately after each blast, haul trucks moved in to clear debris, allowing widening activities to resume without delay.
