Pulice ā a FlatironDragados company recently reached a major milestone on the US 60X Apache Trail project in Mesa, with crews successfully installing five miles of SAMI, or stress-absorbing membrane interlayer, on the eastbound side of the corridor between Sossaman Road and Meridian Road.
This work is critical because SAMI functions as the intermediate layer between the existing pavement and the new surface, extending pavement longevity and supporting a more durable road for the community. Ahead of installation, project teams meticulously prepared and cleaned the roadway and managed traffic control devices to maintain safe, efficient operations.
The milestone marks important progress on ADOTās effort to improve US 60X, also known as Old US 60, Apache Trail and Main Street, between milepost 189.00 and milepost 194.00 in Mesa. The broader project includes milling existing asphaltic concrete pavement and replacing it with new asphaltic concrete, along with curb and gutter, sidewalks, reinforced concrete box culvert extensions, catch basins, pipes, signals, lighting, and other related work.
Upon completion, the project will reduce the roadway to two lanes per direction to accommodate new sidewalks, curbs, gutters, bike lanes, and lighting. These upgrades aim to advance safety, mobility for all users, and drainage efficiency. Completion is scheduled for early June.
