ADOT roadway improvement project modernizes five miles in the booming East Valley
Pulice – a FlatironDragados company is wrapping up the US60x Apache Trail project outside Phoenix, after delivering major roadway improvements along a busy corridor.
The client for the $44 million project is the Arizona Department of Transportation. The work improved 5 miles of Apache Trail, from Sossaman Road to Meridian Road, helping modernize an older roadway corridor that now serves a more urban environment.
What is the US60x Apache Trail project?
The US60x Apache Trail project improved roadway infrastructure along Apache Trail in Mesa, Ariz., where regional growth has increased the need for safer, more reliable and more accessible transportation connections.
Pulice’s work helped bring the corridor into compliance with ADA Standards while improving access for nearby homes, businesses and the traveling public.
Project scopes included:
- Adding sidewalk
- Improving drainage
- Installing lighting
- Revamping traffic signals
- Constructing driveways
- Improving corridor compliance
- Supporting better access for businesses and residents
How did the project improve access along Apache Trail?
One of the project’s most active phases involved constructing nearly 260 driveways for homes and businesses along the corridor.
The driveway work required careful coordination because Apache Trail remained an active roadway serving local traffic, businesses and residents. The team says the pace and volume of that work made it one of the project’s most demanding phases.
How did Pulice and ADOT manage changes during construction?
The project team adapted throughout construction as design changes emerged in the field. Pulice and ADOT worked closely to evaluate issues, identify practical solutions and keep the work moving in a way that supported the owner, the project team and the surrounding community.
That collaboration continued through the project’s final June punch list walkthrough with ADOT, the Maricopa County Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration and other stakeholders.
Project Manager Mark Ghormley was pleased by the successful inspection.
“We’re looking at the quality of work, seeing if there’s anything that needs to be cleaned up or fixed before we closeout the project,” he said. “Anything that’s missed, we run through the project one last time before we leave.”
What happens as the US60x Apache Trail project wraps up?
As the project nears substantial completion, the team is finishing striping, addressing closeout items and preparing the team to move on to its next assignment.
For Mark, the end of the project offers a clear view of the team’s progress and the community impact of the work.
“Wrapping up and seeing all your hard work come together is always gratifying,” Mark said. “That’s my favorite part.”
The US60x Apache Trail project reflects Pulice’s role in delivering transportation infrastructure that supports growth, mobility and access across many communities, including the greater Phoenix region.
