The I-35 Capital Express North project team recently completed a complex paving operation between Rundberg Lane and Braker Lane in North Austin.
Over three weekends, the team placed approximately 9,000 tons of asphalt to raise the profile of the main lanes by four feet. As paving advanced, crews repositioned concrete barriers on both sides of the roadway twice each night to accommodate each stage of the operation.
The work required careful coordination among traffic control teams, field crews, equipment operators and the asphalt subcontractor to keep paving and barrier movements aligned.
The I-35 Capital Express North project is modernizing 11 miles of I-35 north of downtown Austin to improve safety, mobility and reliability along a corridor that serves approximately 250,000 vehicles each day. Improvements include freeway widening, non-tolled managed lanes in both directions, upgraded frontage roads and ramps, two collector-distributor bridges and a new diverging diamond intersection.
