2029Project Overview
The I-35 Capital Express North project is modernizing an 11-mile section of Interstate 35 north of downtown Austin to improve safety, mobility and reliability along one of the region’s busiest corridors, which serves approximately 250,000 vehicles each day. The project addresses growing congestion and increasing travel demand by widening the freeway, adding non-tolled managed lanes in both directions, and improving frontage roads, ramps and freight movement.
A key feature of the project is the construction of two collector-distributor bridges that separate local and through traffic, reducing weaving conflicts and improving traffic flow. The project also includes a new diverging diamond intersection, an innovative design that enhances safety and reduces delays at busy interchanges. Additional improvements include upgraded drainage systems, intelligent transportation technologies, sound walls, shared use paths, or SUPS, and major utility infrastructure enhancements.
