Milestone advances construction on the new eastbound bridge over the Gila River in Pinal County.
Pulice – a Flatiron Dragados company has completed the Phase 3 first deck pour on the new eastbound I-10 bridge over the Gila River, marking another major milestone on the Arizona Department of Transportation’s I-10 Bridges over the Gila River project in Pinal County, about 30 miles south of Phoenix.
The project team placed 430 cubic yards of concrete in just under five hours during an overnight operation. The pour advances construction on the new eastbound bridge deck and moves the project deeper into one of the final phases of bridge construction.
“With larger pours such as deck pours, any number of things can go wrong, from equipment issues, material supply, inclement weather and quality control issues. In this case, everything went perfectly,” said Reza Kamalizad, I-10 Gila River Bridge Project Manager.
The operation required close planning between field crews, QC team, project leadership and concrete supplier Martin Marietta, which supported the pour by delivering 100 cubic yards of concrete per hour without interruption.
What is the I-10 Bridges over the Gila River project?
The ADOT project replaces aging two-lane bridges over the Gila River with new three-lane bridges with full-width shoulders. Crews are also reconstructing existing two-lane roadway approaches as three-lane approaches separated by a concrete median barrier.
The work includes deeper bridge foundations and a higher bridge designed to create a more resilient river crossing on I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson.
Why does the Gila River Bridge project matter?
The bridge replacement is part of the broader I-10 Wild Horse Pass Corridor improvement program, a regional transportation effort focused on one of Arizona’s most important commuter and freight corridors.
When complete, the project will improve long-term mobility, strengthen a critical I-10 crossing and better support drivers traveling through the growing corridor between the Phoenix area and Casa Grande.
The project is scheduled for completion in late 2026.
